Keep in mind that flights from the United States to Germany are an hour and a half longer than to London, so it’s only logical that they cost more. But a winter airfare of $1,000 is unrealistic, and very few people pay that much. Travel guru Arthur Frommer suggests flying to London and booking an onward flight with one of the new cut-rate carriers like Ryanair, Germanwings or Hapag-Lloyd Express. Right now they’re offering flights for as little as $39 each way between London and Frankfurt or Cologne. —Sally Atkinson
