According to The Verge’s Tom Warren, however, the supposed differences between the Series X and this cheaper next-gen Xbox might not be as steep as first thought. Discussing his research into the supposed second Xbox in a tweet, Warren claimed that the console won’t be as underclocked as he originally believed, citing it’ll likely run at the same speed as its more powerful variant.

“I’ve been reporting on Xbox Lockhart having a slightly underclocked CPU, but I now believe it’s the same speed as Series X,” Warren states in his tweet, continuing on to claim that the two consoles will have “different GPU frequencies and CU counts.” With that in mind, a number of commenters and Warren began to speculate on what the machine will assumingly aim to be, with the focus seeming to be on a console that targets a 1080 to 1440p resolution with 60fps gameplay. Overall, it’ll seemingly be a cheaper machine that features a lower resolution and fewer bells and whistles but still a strong, next-generation experience.

Going on to discuss the idea more in the comments, Warren also seems to highlight that it’ll boast less ram than the Series X, stating there will be “7.5GB usable.” It seems likely that the Lockhart is going to be Xbox’s strategy to try and get more players aboard the next-generation console from day 1, following in the same vein as Sony releasing its digital-only variation of the PlayStation 5. That being said, it’s fantastic to see Microsoft catering to players of all financial backgrounds, with consoles being major investments to many low-income households. It seems the company is once again proving that it’s a very player-friendly platform, offering the future of gaming for a more affordable cost.

As for the company’s reveal of the Lockhart model, it seems likely that it’ll be fully unveiled at Xbox’s next major conference set to debut in the coming weeks. That being said, Microsoft’s July 20/20 conference still hasn’t received any form of a release date, with some even speculating its been pushed back as far as August.
